Fighting Food Waste - Banning grocery stores/ businesses from destroying/ throwing out food

I want Ontario to spend an undetermined amount to fund a pilot about reducing food waste in Ontario in order to fight climate change through conservation and a low carbon economy.

This idea got 3,269 votes and will receive a one-time investment of $600,000.

What is your project idea? 

Food production uses a lot of energy. In order to reduce our global footprint, and reduce food waste I propose we study the possibility of banning supermarkets/ food factories from destroying/ throwing away unsold food/ "not attractive" food/ food close to its expiry date.

How will this idea provide a solution? 

Producing/ growing food takes a tremendous amount of energy.
By banning the destruction of edible food, Ontario would benefit in several ways:

- more food for food banks/ missions/ school breakfast programs
- lower carbon footprint by using 100% of produced foods
- spoiled food could be donated to local farms for livestock feed (when appropriate, therefore reducing costs on further local food production

Agreed - it's insane how much food is wasted because it's not aesthetically pleasing. A carrot is a carrot. It uses so much energy to grow things, they need to be used and not added to landfills. Dog food/animal feed is a great way to use food that may not be fit for human consumption (unsold/stale bread, etc) but would be fine for animals.

Banning supermarket food waste has been very successful in France and is currently being considered in numerous European countries. The UN has reported that if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter after China and the US - that puts things in perspective. We have a shared responsibility to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. Ontario has done very little to address the food waste issue. In Ontario, we need to re-examine best before date labeling - often food is discarded unnecessarily. The agricultural industry and supermarkets should be encouraged to sell "less than perfect" produce (with small blemishes and irregular shapes) at a reduced cost rather than wasting it. Educating the consumer about this issue is necessary to encourage them to purchase less-than-perfect produce and to reduce food waste at home and in businesses. This will take a re-imagining of the entire food supply system, but it is absolutely worth the effort.

1.3Billion (B) tonnes of food worth $31B is wasted every year due to super market waste yet 850 000 Canadians still use food banks every month. Companies must take action but it is not free to move all the food they could have thrown and let waste management take care of. There must be a financial compensation from the government if the form of a tax break or any other means that would satisfy the larger grocer companies in Ontario and ultimately Canada.

Beyond the moral consideration that there are people starving without food. Food waste contributes a lot of unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions from just decomposing it. Even if wasted food were to be composted, oxygen is actually consumed in the decomposition process and carbon dioxide is emitted. Food waste sent to the landfill will decompose in anaerobic (deprived of oxygen) conditions that release methane gas (28xGlobal warming potential of CO2), nitrous oxide (265xGlobal Warming Potential of CO2). Technically these gas are also emitted in the aerobic decomposition process but at much lesser quantities. PSA: Please do not throw food waste into the garbage and compost instead!
