Practical Biking Across Ontario

Created on December 9, 2016 by Darnel Harris.  4 comments

I want Ontario to spend $50,000 - 250,000 to fund a pilot about moving goods and people by cargo bikes, trikes or enclosed cargo cruisers in order to fight climate change through conservation and a low carbon economy.

Cargo bikes, trikes, and enclosed cargo cruisers (collectively referred to as “cargo bikes” here) are innovative tools that can be used to deliver goods and transport people. Using a recreational bike is often impractical. There is no space to put a week’s groceries, carry children, or pack crates for delivery. Enabling people to make practical trips without a car will reduce congestion and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while helping families and businesses save money. This pilot will demonstrate these benefits by showing the public that using cargo bikes makes sense.

For over a decade, I’ve managed a small business in Ontario – an online magazine. I’ve often wished for the ability to find a paid intern from a journalism school, but there’s currently no central way to do this. Business owners have to search school by school, and small businesses often run into barriers.

I believe Ontario should create a digital service where post-secondary students can register their area of specialty, school, and program, and business owners can post openings and search for suitable candidates to interview.

So essentially what this is its an account/physical card that is made under someone using perhaps an SIN number or some government issued ID. Once you login you can submit and import information from you dentist/pharmacist/doctor/private surgeon/ chiropractor... or anyone that has information about your health information. This login will be useful to collect all the data about your health in one place so if you visit a new country or just a new healthcare professional across province or borders they will have all your information and can make the best diagnosis.

'My Ontario' mobile app would harvest suggestions, problems, ideas, and solutions at the local level and funnel them to the appropriate regional or provincial ministry or office. It would create of paradigm shift of citizens creating actionable content and interacting with government as an engaging form of real-time entertainment, rather than a source of frustration.

Create an online service to enable people to find a family doctor, and for family doctors to find new patients.

Doctors
* register and verify their identity
* indicate whether they are accepting new patients
* provide some details (e.g. name, location, contact information)

People looking for a doctor
* register
* input their location
* see contact information for nearby available doctors

People should receive notifications of new matches, e.g. by email or text.

I am submitting this idea on behalf of: Jon Alexander, Raymond Ang, Adrian Haldenby, Bill Mann, Ryan McCormack, Muriel Schvartzman, Danny Tshitumbu

They are the people who had this idea and have done the work on a prototype at a recent hackathon that focused on Toronto's Poverty Reduction Strategy.

The project is to create an online tool to access programs available to people on Ontario Works. It would streamline the application process and make it easy for a user to answer a few questions and then get a list of program options that they are eligible for.

Food production uses a lot of energy. In order to reduce our global footprint, and reduce food waste I propose we study the possibility of banning supermarkets/ food factories from destroying/ throwing away unsold food/ "not attractive" food/ food close to its expiry date.

The Government of Ontario has published a number of documents on the importance of the first six years of a child’s life. The Ontario Early Years Policy Framework (2013) identified the following priority areas:
• continue with the implementation of full-day kindergarten and junior kindergarten by September 2014;
• create an effective approach to implementing Best Start Child and Family Centres by September 2014;
• improve the delivery of speech and language services(*);
• stabilize and transform the child care sector(*).

This would be implemented through an incentive program for young aboriginal adults to get a teaching degree and then teach on a reserve. They would receive grant money to do so and would not have to worry about paying for their education, as long as they took placements on a reserve in Ontario. This program would only be open to young aboriginal adults in Canada.

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in Canada. People who experience an arrest have a 2 to 3 times greater chance of survival if they receive CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and/or the application of an AED (automated external defibrillator ) within minutes of the event: and the sooner the better. It can often take five minutes or longer depending on location once 911 is called for first responders to arrive. For every minute after a cardiac arrest that a person goes without CPR or defibrillation, they lose 10% of their chance of survival.
